The Question
I spent the first years of my life in a hospital nursery, waiting for someone to come back for me. Nobody did — until a woman walked in to look at her husband's secret and walked out with a daughter.
I grew up as the adopted child who searched strangers' faces for her own. I survived a childhood I was too ashamed to describe, married the danger I had sworn to escape, and woke one morning to an emptied home and a missing daughter.
What followed reads like a thriller: a courthouse ambush. A stalker who crossed state lines. A laundry room floor that became a bedroom for me and my little girl. And a question, born on a midnight walk between jobs — is there more to life than just surviving?
The answer took twenty-three years, a United States Army uniform, and a promise kept to the little girl I used to be.
I enlisted at twenty-eight with almost nothing but a sense of purpose. I retired a Chief Warrant Officer Four. In between: Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan. The degrees I had once been forced to abandon. And a generational pattern — mothers separated from daughters, pain handed down like an heirloom — that stops with me.
In the final year of writing this new edition, life delivered an ending no author could invent. My birth mother's last words, waiting quietly on a screen, answering the question I had carried for fifty years.
